Billabong grom competition, San Juan, la union

It's no secret that surfing has grown into a major phenomenon in Philippine extreme sports. Slowly but surely surf spots have been discovered along the different shores all over the country, and in the process has attracted wandering foreign surfers looking for a new ride, and more importantly, has bred an array of amazingly skilled local surfers, both young and old.

On the long weekend of Nov 30-Dec 1, 2007, the Billabong San Juan Surf School and Stokedinc. pioneered the First ever National BILLABONG Grommet Competition for the undiscovered "Grommets" of the country. A grommet, or simply "grom", is a term that refers to any surfer 15 years and below. With the support of major sponsors and the dedication of the organizers, we were able to gather groms from La Union, Baler, Lanuza, Samar, Daet, and Siargao.

There were __ participants all in all, and each had their fair share of heats where they could prove themselves worthy to advance to the semis and then to the final round. Day 1 of the comp was set for the elimination round, and then the final 3 battled their way in the afternoon of Day 2. And here are the podium finishers:

  • 1st: Pete Pete "Justin Timberlake Jurassic" Alipayo (Siargao Island)
  • 2nd: Pete Quiong Catulay (Siargao Island)
  • 3rd: Paul John Alipayo (Siargao Island)

Of course this successful event would not have been possible without the much appreciated support of Billabong, Stoked Inc, Beach Hut, Fluid Surf, Aloha Boardsports, Partas Buslines, The United Pinoy Surfers, The Philippine Organization of Surfers - MANILA(POSERS), and the help of organizers, primarily the Billabong Gromp Comp visionary Luke Landrigan, Event Manager Donnah "MAHDAM" Alcantara, Head Judge Mako Villareal, the Panel of Judges (International Filipino Longboarder Ian Saguan, Osot Alcala, Okoy Rojo, Abdel Elecho), La Union Grom sponsors Joy and Ishii, Sea Nymph's lovely couple and our competition arena hosts Paul and Neri, Gerry Sanders and his son Gerry Jr. the Magician, Official Flagman and Timekeeper Ronnie "Poks" Esquivel, our team manager Joncy Sumulong, etc. This comp is surely the first of many more to come, to support our local surfers, promote the numerous surf spots all over the country, and ultimately establish the surfing lifestyle as a new milestone in Philippine culture.

The much anticipated 1st Muhlach Cup is finally over. It was a fantastic event which brought the top riders from all over the Philippines, to compete and showcase their riding skills at the Lago de oro cable ski park in Calatagan Batangas. So here are the podium finishers.

Stokedinc. in Siargao Cloud 9 Billabong surf event

As we left for the airport on our way to Surigao we did not know what to expect, as Jv and I have never been to siargao. It was a cloudy day and we had a 1 hour flight to Surigao then upon landing we took a ferry ride to Siargao island. It was a long 4 hour boat ride and was quite taxing, drinking, sleeping and chatting were the activities then. When we got to the island we took a quick bus ride and voila there we are! I went to the shore line and saw this beautiful coast line, and more importantly the huge waves.

Unfortunately we missed the Billabong surf event as they had such good waves during the week that they ended 2 days earlier than expected, so what do we do then? We went to go surfing! It was a challenge for me... A BIG CHALLENGE! I did not realize how tiring it was just to paddle out, especially on days with strong currents. By the time I was to catch my first wave well I couldn't even raise my arms anymore, I got to hand it to the surfers, you guys do have a lot of excercise paddling and swimming around. Props to you guys! As a wakeskater or wakeboarder balancing is almost second nature, but I think 70% of surfing is paddling! The lifestyle is a bit different compared to wakeriders, surfers seem a little more laid back and steady. They seem to enjoy just hanging out on the water and off. Talking and sharing stories from their travels and interesting people they met and the culture they have experienced. This is one for the books for me, a great experience I wish to have once again.

Grinching at the Metroactive anniversary event

April 11, 2007 2pm sitting at my desk I get a text of an invite for the Metroactive anniversary gig at Playa Calatagan for April 14th. Next day we got our heads together and decided to bring out our Grinch and have a go at it over there! Metroactive sure knows how to bring a party together, a variety of sports activities all came together that day. We were glad to be a part of it and winch the hell out of them! Checkout some of the pics in our gallery section.

Team STOKED at the HSBC Wakeboarding World Cup

On the last weekend of September, 2006, right about the time of the dreaded “millenyo” super typhoon, the Stoked boys were invited to embark on a trip that would consist of watching the world’s best wakeboarders, battling it out on the last stop of the HSBC WAKEBOARD WORLD CUP, held at The Bedok Resrvoir, Singapore.

Big names like Philip “Froggy” Solven, Rusty Malinoski, Chad Sharpe, Keith Lidberg, Dallas Friday, Danny Watkins, Emily Copeland-Durham, and Danny Harf, just to name a few, were all confirmed to be there and compete! So now, knowing who was going to be in the roster, the Stoked boys were definitely going to be in for a treat for sure!

Stylish batwings, hoochies, nuclear glides, tootsie rolls, kgb’s, front mobes, crow mobes, roll to blinds, tantrums, whirlies, 360’s, 540’s, 720’s, 900’s, and every combination thinkable with these tricks were unleashed to a roaring crowd of about 300. Fierce battles were cast! So fierce that Dallas Friday broke a femur when she threw and landed, well not really, a huge whirly bird on the women’s category! Hope you get well soon Dallas! After the competition proper, a classic double-up competition took place, where Danny Harf and Rusty Malinoski were trying the “holy grail” move in wakeboarding today, the 1080! No one landed it, but the effort from the two was enough to satisfy the crowd.

It was a truly memorable experience according to Mumph. He mentions that the riding wasn’t the only thing to be blown away about. It was how nice all the pro’s were and how they are compared to wakeboard enthusiasts like you and me. “The guys were so chill man! In the end of each run, we were able to hang and chat about everything under the weather apart from boarding. They would be so Stoked watching their fellow competitors throw sick moves and would go absolutely nuts when they would stick it! And on the last night were everyone was partying… more words and thoughts were exchanged til it was our contacts that were being passed… new friends were made man…and these are the guys we look up to!" Enough said, now that the connections were made, will these guys come to visit our neck of the woods? It’s highly possible. We’ll keep you posted!

Stoked Inc. in Magandang Umaga Pilipinas

On november 15, 2006 Magandang Umaga Pilipinas featured BMX and Skateboarding in their show and STOKED Inc. was there to supply them with information about the sport and give them details on the weapons of choice that these atheletes use. As we all know STOKED Inc. caters to extreme sports enthusiasts, from skateboarding, bmx, wakeboarding and surfing, so it is only proper that we are the chosen group to represent the lifestyle. Featured on this segment were riders from Team Malachi, headed by Jhun Nocum. Speaking on behalf of STOKED Inc. was our beloved and strikingly handsome president, JV Borromeo, showcasing not only his knowledge on wakeboarding, but also giving his two cents worth on skateboarding gear. Top ranking local skateboarder, Pedro Santos, also a STOKED Inc. sales representative took part in this ocassion.
